AI Scribe Meets Medical Encyclopedia: Suki Embeds Evidence-Based Answers Directly Into Patient Encounters
New clinical decision support feature powered by UpToDate delivers patient-specific insights 83% of the time, merging ambient documentation with real-time medical reference.

Suki, a leader in ambient clinical intelligence, has launched a clinical decision support feature that brings evidence-based medical reference directly into the patient encounter. The new "Ask" capability, integrated into the Suki for Clinicians app, allows physicians to pose complex clinical questions and receive answers tailored to the specific patient in front of them—without leaving their workflow or toggling between applications.
The feature represents the first product integration of Wolters Kluwer's UpToDate Expert AI API, combining Suki's ambient documentation technology with one of medicine's most trusted reference databases. According to the companies, clinicians selected patient-specific insights 83% of the time across various query types, including diagnoses, medication dosages, and safety considerations.
From Documentation to Decision Support
Suki's evolution from AI scribe to clinical decision support platform marks a strategic expansion beyond transcription. The "Ask" feature leverages the company's Ambient Clinical Intelligence (ACI) technology, which already captures real-time conversation context during patient visits. By integrating this ambient data with existing patient chart information from the EHR, the system contextualizes responses from UpToDate's clinical database to the individual patient's circumstances.
The tool is available across Epic, Oracle Health, athenahealth, and Meditech electronic health record systems, positioning it for broad deployment across diverse healthcare settings. Responses include transparent sourcing, medication and dosing considerations, and links to supporting content—all grounded in material developed and maintained by more than 7,600 physician authors, editors, and peer reviewers.
Bridging Generalized AI and Actionable Guidance
The 83% preference rate for patient-specific insights underscores a potential gap in clinical AI applications. While generalized AI models can retrieve medical information, translating that knowledge into actionable guidance for a specific patient requires integration with real-time clinical data and conversation context. Rather than requiring clinicians to separately look up information and then mentally apply it to their patient, the system performs that contextualization automatically.
Abhi Pathak, Chief Product Officer at Suki, and Yaw Fellin, SVP and GM of Clinical Decision Support at Wolters Kluwer Health, are leading the collaboration. The partnership model—pairing ambient AI documentation with established clinical reference databases—may signal a competitive differentiator as the ambient AI market matures beyond basic transcription capabilities.
Expanding the Clinical Workflow Footprint
The "Ask" launch follows Suki's rollout of an AI dictation solution in late August 2024, which was natively built inside Epic and Meditech EHR systems. Together, these products suggest Suki is positioning itself as a comprehensive clinical workflow platform rather than a point solution for documentation alone.
For healthcare organizations evaluating ambient AI vendors, the integration of clinical decision support directly into the documentation workflow may reduce the need for separate reference tools and streamline the path from clinical question to evidence-based answer—all within the context of the patient encounter already underway.
