Dr. Kim is a Founder of Activ Surgical Inc and Co-Founder of eKare Inc. He was Vice President of the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. Dr. Kim served as Associate Surgeon-in-Chief of the Joseph E. Robert, Jr., Center for Surgical Care at Children’s National. An internationally known pediatric surgeon and scientist, Dr. Kim creates value through team building, Innovation, cultural change and brand enhancement. Dr. Kim’s interests are in intelligent digital health, including image guidance and smart robotics; simulation technologies; and the potential of imaging technologies such as high frequency/intensity-focused ultrasound (HIFU) as non-invasive alternatives to conventional surgery. He was the lead for FDA funded National Capital Consortium for Pediatric Device Innovation (NCC-PDI) (www.innovate4kids.org). He led with the Innovation Institute and bioengineering team to pioneer additive and tissue printing technologies with an eye on developing personalized medicine for children. Dr. Kim joined Children’s National from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, a national and international leading institution in pediatric research and care. There, he served as a general neonatal and thoracic surgeon, founding lead for the Centre for Image-Guided Innovation and Therapeutic Intervention (CIGITI), and senior associate scientist in the hospital’s research institute. His clinical specialties are complex surgical airway reconstructions, advanced minimally invasive surgery, and vascular reconstructive surgery for hepatobiliary diseases in children. Dr. Kim received his medical training, including the distinction of Master of Surgery, at McGill University. He completed his surgical residency training at the University of Toronto as well as his fellowship in pediatric surgery at the University’s Hospital for Sick Children.

My career began with advanced medical imaging product management and progressed to the development of AI-driven surgical robots. Today, as a partner at HealthTech Innovations Partners, I am more focused on innovation, investment, and the global application of AI in the medical field. I have successfully launched medical imaging and robotic products that have generated over $100 million in global revenue and led the development of several FDA-approved AI-enhanced devices that have significantly improved surgical accuracy and training efficiency. Through strategic partnerships with hospitals, insurance companies, and research institutions, I ensure that technological innovations truly meet clinical needs. We have raised over $50 million in venture capital to accelerate the development of medical technologies.

I am currently the Chief Technology Officer at Activ Surgical, a digital surgery pioneer, envisioning a future of collaborative surgery, with surgical intelligence empowering scopes and robots to see what humans cannot see. As a highly accomplished medical roboticist, I drive Activ Surgical's vision to deliver breakthrough innovation in surgery, taking advantage of the next era of deep-learning & data science. I am leading our team forward as we work to dramatically improve outcomes, safety, and accessibility by offering a first-of-its-kind surgical intelligence and sensing platform that enables real-time intelligence and visualization to surgeons. Prior to joining Activ Surgical, I was the Director of Robotics at Medrobotics Corporation, where I led the development and release of the first flexible surgical robotics platform, grew the engineering team from two to fifty people, and took numerous surgical robotics products through 510k clearance. In addition, I have held Systems and Software Engineering positions at RTS Life Science and Hatch Technology. Founding Story

Founded by Dr. Peter Kim, a world-renowned surgeon and medical technologist who developed the technology over seven years with more than $13 million in non-dilutive grant funding while leading the Shaikh Institute at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The company completed the world's first autonomous robotic surgery of soft tissue in 2018.
