Austin AI Startup Bets on End-to-End Automation to Solve Healthcare's 42% Missed-Call Crisis
Hello Patient's acquisition of Converse Health creates a unified platform that automates patient interactions from first contact through post-visit paperwork, targeting the administrative bottlenecks that leave nearly half of patient calls unanswered.

Medical practices are drowning in administrative work, and patients are paying the price. Up to 42% of patient calls and texts go unanswered during busy hours, according to data cited in the acquisition announcement. Now, Austin-based Hello Patient is making a strategic bet that the solution lies not in point tools, but in comprehensive automation that spans the entire patient journey.
The agentic AI company has acquired Converse Health, a move designed to extend its capabilities from front-office phone interactions into back-office administrative workflows including referral processing, chart-driven follow-ups, and authorization paperwork. The combined platform aims to give high-volume outpatient practices a unified AI agent system that handles patient communications from initial contact through post-visit documentation.
From Front Desk to Back Office
Hello Patient, founded in 2024, built its initial platform around automating patient-facing communications—the phone calls, texts, and scheduling requests that overwhelm front-office staff during peak hours. Converse Health, founded in 2023 by Louis Sallerson, Val Zinchenko, and Adam Teitelman, focused on back-office administrative tasks that create bottlenecks after patients make contact.
The acquisition brings together these complementary capabilities into what the company describes as a complete administrative automation solution. The expanded platform now handles referral and fax intake, chart-driven follow-up workflows, authorization paperwork, and records and registration processes—all integrated with major EHR and practice management systems including ModMed, athenahealth, and eClinicalWorks.
Converse Health had raised $1.3 million and served dozens of practices across dermatology, women's health, pain medicine, and orthopedics before the acquisition. The company's technology is HIPAA-compliant and SOC 2 Type 2 certified, with business associate agreements signed with every client.
Real-World Results in Orthopedics
The operational impact of back-office automation is already visible in deployed practices. Ortho1, an orthopedic group, implemented the Converse Health technology across 100% of incoming referrals and reported processing referrals in half the previous time. Among patients who engaged with the automated system, 57% successfully scheduled appointments—a conversion rate the company says directly translates to faster access to care and reduced revenue leakage.
These metrics highlight the dual problem facing outpatient practices: missed patient communications create access barriers and lost revenue, while manual referral processing extends the time between physician recommendation and actual treatment. For practices operating on thin margins, both issues compound operational stress and force clinical staff to spend time on administrative tasks rather than patient care.
The Agentic AI Bet
The acquisition reflects a broader strategic question in healthcare AI: whether point solutions that augment specific tasks will give way to comprehensive platforms that autonomously orchestrate multi-step workflows. Hello Patient's approach requires deep EHR integration and the ability to execute complex decision trees without human intervention—a more technically demanding but potentially more defensible market position than single-function tools.
As healthcare organizations face persistent staffing shortages and rising administrative costs, the appeal of end-to-end automation grows. Whether practices will adopt comprehensive platforms or continue assembling best-of-breed point solutions remains an open question, but Hello Patient is clearly betting on the former.
