Lab profile
About CHI Lab
The CHI Lab focuses on AI in healthcare (Clinical AI) and is one of the largest labs in Oxford's Department of Engineering Science. The group specializes in custom foundation models, large language models, natural language processing, and probabilistic inference for non-imaging medical applications. Their twin aims are to make fundamental contributions to AI theory in medicine while producing systems that help patients, with clinical collaboration at the heart of each project.

Research areas and highlights
Topics and recent work as stated on the lab’s own site.
- Acute and Critical CareDeveloping predictive AI-based systems using ICU and acute ward data to prevent avoidable patient deterioration and improve hospital operations.
- Infectious DiseaseUsing machine learning to identify and fight outbreaks of infectious disease, including COVID-19, in collaboration with the UK Health Security Agency and global CDCs.
- WearablesResearching mobile health systems with patient-worn sensors for robust vital signs tracking, intelligent data processing, and forecasting serious physiological events.
- Complex DiseaseDeveloping AI-based systems to exploit rich clinical datasets for improving understanding and treatment of cardiovascular disease, COPD, and immune disease.
- Low- and Middle-Income SettingsUsing AI-based algorithms within smartphones and wearables to improve access to healthcare in LMICs through inexpensive sensors and decision-support capabilities.
- PROTONA relational foundation model designed to generate new insights into neurological disease by analysing millions of biomedical relationships and brain cells.
