BACKGROUND: Circulating biomarkers are often used to infer nutrient intakes and overall nutrient status, but may not accurately reflect nutrient concentrations in specific tissues. Since direct measurement of human tissue nutrient concentrations is rarely feasible, researchers rely on biomarkers as proxies.
