Abstract

Mechanistically, OPs inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme that terminates cholinergic transmission, triggering a sustained activation of acetylcholine receptors. A component of the treatment for OP intoxication is oximes as AChE reactivators. However, oximes may not be efficacious and could worsen OP effects.
