Anthropic Unveils Claude Duet: Autonomous AI Agent for Professionals and Small Business Owners

Anthropic has entered the autonomous AI agent race with Claude Duet, a proactive system designed to monitor tasks, generate summaries, and complete work even when users are offline. Available as a research preview for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US through a waitlist, Duet positions itself as a competitor to Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots by offering continuous background task management for professionals and small-business owners.

How Claude Duet Works

Unlike traditional chatbots that respond only when prompted, Claude Duet operates autonomously on its own dedicated virtual machine and browser. Each morning, the system can assemble a brief covering items it determines need attention, then continue monitoring services throughout the day and message users when decisions are required.

According to Anthropic, Duet is capable of performing complex tasks beyond simple reminders or summaries. The system can schedule meetings, build dashboards, prepare financial or sales forecasts, draft follow-up emails, and work on web applications. Because it runs on its own virtual machine and browser, these tasks can continue even when the user's computer is off.

Built-In Limitations and Safety Guardrails

The system includes built-in safety guardrails, requiring explicit user permission before sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting content. While Anthropic is giving Duet considerable operational freedom, clear limits remain on what it can do independently.

As a research preview, Anthropic has acknowledged that the agent still has significant limitations. The company states that Duet can misread conversation threads, misjudge the urgency of tasks, and miss updates that arrive between check-ins. Additionally, all background work counts toward the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. Complex tasks such as building financial models or presentations can consume those limits faster because they require more model turns.

Positioning in the Autonomous Agent Market

The AI race has recently shifted toward building agents that can continue working even when users are not actively interacting with them. Meta helped push this concept into the spotlight with Muse, OpenAI followed with Dots, and now Anthropic is entering the space with Claude Duet. Anthropic is pitching Duet mainly at professionals and small-business owners who want assistance keeping track of work without constantly checking every application themselves.

The research preview represents Anthropic's effort to compete in the emerging market for autonomous AI agents that can handle routine tasks, provide proactive updates, and work continuously in the background—capabilities that distinguish these systems from conventional chatbot interfaces.
