About Grail
GRAIL is a healthcare company focused on alleviating the global burden of cancer through early detection. Founded in 2016 as a spinout from Illumina, GRAIL pioneered the multi-cancer early detection (MCED) category after discovering that cell-free DNA from cancer could be detected in blood samples. The company's flagship product, the Galleri test, is a first-of-its-kind blood test capable of screening for signals from more than 50 types of cancer before symptoms appear, including many cancers that lack recommended screening tests today. GRAIL combines the power of next-generation sequencing, population-scale clinical studies, and state-of-the-art machine learning, software, and automation to revolutionize cancer screening. The company operates CAP-accredited, CLIA-certified laboratory facilities exceeding 170,000 square feet with capacity to support multiple years of growth. GRAIL serves healthcare systems, providers, payers, and individual patients primarily in the United States and United Kingdom. The company has enrolled over 380,000 participants across its unprecedented clinical program, generating more than 300 scientific publications and presentations. GRAIL's mission is to detect cancer early when it can be cured, fundamentally changing the cancer continuum from late-stage diagnosis to early intervention.
Mission & Story
Mission
Detect cancer early, when it can be cured.
Founding Story
GRAIL was founded in 2016 after an unexpected discovery in 2015 when Illumina's non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) detected genomic abnormalities in pregnant mothers unrelated to their children's health—the test had detected cell-free DNA from cancer present in the mother's blood. Illumina spun out GRAIL as a separate entity to focus on researching this breakthrough, naming it GRAIL because co-founders believed a simple blood test could be the 'holy GRAIL' of cancer detection.
